Obwohl tief traditionsverbunden und eher auf organische Evolution als auf revolutionären Umsturz bedacht, hat Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) mit seinen kompositorischen Innovationen die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts entscheidend mit- und umgestaltet. Er stieß damit bei seinen Zeitgenossen bekanntlich nicht nur auf Gegenliebe, sondern oft auch auf heftigen Widerstand. Fast allen Beobachtern war jedoch bewusst, dass hier eine außergewöhnliche, bedeutende Künstlerpersönlichkeit am Werk war, über deren Schaffen man nicht mit Stillschweigen hinweggehen konnte.
Dieser Wirkungsmacht Schönbergs will die vorliegende Publikation anhand von insgesamt 59 ausgewählten Rezeptionsdokumenten (Musik- und Textmanuskripte, aber auch Konzertprogramme, Schallplatten u. a.) aus den Sammlungsbeständen der Paul Sacher Stiftung nachspüren. Im Fokus stehen somit nicht die Quellen von Schönbergs eigener Hand, sondern Dokumente aus der Hand von Komponisten, Interpreten und Publizisten unterschiedlichster Provenienz und Prägung, die sich im Lauf der letzten 100 Jahre mit dem Werk Schönbergs beschäftigt haben.
